Target Market Terror By Luann Allen

It seems that one of the most difficult decisions for service professionals is choosing a target market. They are afraid that if they choose one target they will miss out on tons of business. Let me tell you that this is not true. It is difficult to make them understand that this makes them a generalist, and not someone who has an area of expertise. That they can then use to identify with their clients.Yet it is something that I always have difficulty making my clients understand. If they don't do anything else that I teach them, choosing a target market will increase their business. It will also get them focused.I'm always looking for good analogies to use so that they can understand the concept. Let's look at the online dating scene and compare singles who go on Match.com with those who choose eHarmony. Match.com has simple rules. Put up your picture and bio(which may or may not be accurate) and you can start to email each other. eHarmony makes you fill out a 20 page survey, describing yourself, and then they send you matches that would be complementary to you. Which would you choose?Match.com has a larger database, but eHarmony has more successes to brag about. You can tell me that the people who go on Match are looking for something different that the eHarmony people and that's true. If you are looking for a long term relationship, wouldn't you rather find that person on eHarmony so that you are more compatible and so you aren't wasting time with someone who you can't last with and really be your best with?Another analogy would be fishing, for those of you who like to fish. If you don't use the type of bait you need to catch the fish you want, your line could be sitting in the middle of exactly what you want to catch, and you'll never attract them. You'll be busy taking the lousy fish off your hook and throwing them back! It's the same with finding the right clients. You need to find the ones who you can serve the best by understanding their needs and intricacies. You'll attract them by telling them in theirlanguage that you are there for them, so you won't waste your time throwing them back if they aren't right for you.Where do you start? Make a list of things you know about. If you need to know more, read! Or talk to people who do know. Then you can choose your target market and find those you are meant to serve.Luann Allen is the Success Fanatic and a Certified Book Yourself Solid Coach.
